LAKE LANIER IS FULL POOL, THE MAIN LAKE AND CREEKS ARE STAINED & LOW 60’S

This Lake Lanier Bass report is from Jimbo Mathley. www.jimboonlanier.com 770 542 7764

The DVD’s from my January 17th Seminar are now available. They are $39 each. Give me a call if you are interested in purchasing one: 770 542 7764.

Bass fishing is good. The largemouth are on bed all over the lake, and there are some BIG ones on right now. If you like to bed fish, now is your time for sure. There are some spots on bed too, but I look for more of them to go on with the upcoming New Moon. A 1/8 ounce Davis Shaky head with a 4 inch worm fished on a G Loomis NRX 822 Shaky Head rod is a great way to catch these fish. Work the Shaky Head slowly and look for the bites to be light, which makes a rod like the 822 so important. A fluke is great tool to spot these fish. A spot on the bed will almost always rise up to at least look at a fluke if not eat it. Work the fluke slowly and give the bait plenty of time to fall on a slack line. Watch your fluke and your line for indications of a bite. If they don’t eat the fluke and only swing at it, follow with the worm for a sure bite. A Senko is a good bet on these fish as well. Look for spot beds on hard clay banks and points with sandy areas being strong as well. Look for the prespawn females to be on steeper rocky points near these spawning areas. The same baits will work, but others will catch the pre spawners as well. A jerk bait, a spinnerbait and a swim bait have all been good when the wind is up on the rocky points and shallow humps. I only have one day left in April, and May is also filling up quickly. Please let me know ASAP if you would like to book a trip! For April I have the 23rd available. Buzz me about May. Give me a call and let’s go get ’em!

This Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On Service 404 561 2564 www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is good. Fishing this week as been up and down and very wet! The Stripers are still being caught over open water mid lake and have started to move into the backs of the creeks. Live bait continues to be your best bet. Blueback herring is the bait of choice when fished on both un weighted free lines 100 feet behind the boat and with a one or two split shots 50 to 80 feet back. Fish your planner board lines 50 to 60 feet behind the board. There are also fish being caught on points half way back in the creeks. This bite will only get stronger over the next couple of weeks. Keep your trolling motor speed between .6 and 1.2 miles per hour. You can catch a couple of small stripers and large spotted bass casting a Red Fin at first light. It is always a good idea to keep someone on the front deck casting a Red Fin or a buck tail jig while you are pulling bait. You may also want to pick up a couple of big gizzard shad and put one on a float behind the boat for that 40 pound fish. The down rod bite continues to be slow. We hope to get out with some Umbrella rigs and hit some creek points this week. There are a lot of spotted bass in the same areas both over deep water and shallow points and flats. Buy a few extra baits and change your baits often as the spotted bass will attack the herring without you noticing and you will end up fishing with dead or injured bait. The water temperature is in the mid 60 degrees during the day and the water is stained on the main lake with heavy stain in the backs of the creeks. The lake is less than one foot below full pool.

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, Member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. 404-425-4059 See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.com

Crappie fishing is very good. The water temperature is about sixty five degrees. Pretty much everything is working. Whether using crappie minnows or a jig under a cork, cast your bait or jig through the weed lines and retrieve slowly. Some blow downs are still holding fish in pockets and backs of creeks. Shooting docks remains the best method of catching the bigger fish. You should be ten feet or so away from the dock, with a five-to six foot medium action rod, and four pound high visibility test line. Release a length of line about two-thirds the length of your rod, and leave the bail in the open position while you are holding the line with one finger. Grab the curve of the hook (below the barb) and bring it toward your body. Keep the base of the rod parallel to the water while pulling the line toward you to sharply bow the tip of the rod. Release the jig and the line at the same time, while aiming toward your target. A good way to practice this method at home is in your driveway, standing about 20 feet from your garage door, with the door cracked open about a foot. Follow the steps above, aiming for the garage door opening. To avoid accidents while you practice, clip the barb of the hook (especially if you have a cat!) By far, all year round, this is the best way to consistently catch crappie on Lake Lanier. Always remember that crappie relate to structure. Put your Lowrance to good use, especially if you have side scan. You can scan docks and mark any structure under the dock. Target docks in eight to twenty feet of water that have some type structure below. Your electronics can be very helpful in locating structure. We’ve been catching fish on docks and brush piles near docks pretty much all day long. Blow downs and weed lines are doing better in the mornings and late in the day. Jiffy jigs or Bobby Garland soft body grubs with 1/24 ounce or 1/32 ounce jig heads remain our number one choice. For those who prefer live bait, a slip cork and a trusty crappie minnow should put a few fish in the boat. We feel that the majority of the females will be completing their spawn within the next few days, so get out there and fish while fishing is good and before the lake gets busier in the summer. Wear your life jacket, it can save your life.

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 3.5 FEET, STAINED & UPPER 60’S TO LOW 70’S

Bass fishing is good. The main spawn is in full swing and there are lots of fish shallow. The best bet will be either finding beds and flipping a lizard or creature bait in the bed and shake it until the bass gets mad enough to eat it, or just burning the shallows with a Zoom Super Fluke or even a Strike King spinner bait with tandem willow leaf blades in the shad color. Also use the mid depth crank baits up in the coves and pockets. Use a shad or fire tiger #5 Rapala Shad Rap. Throw them right to the bank and crank them back. Bandit 200 series are also a good choice and be sure it has a little chartreuse in it. The Alabama rig is also working for the shallow fish. Keep throwing a green pumpkin 3/8 ounce jig with a Zoom Super Chunk trailer in root beer green pepper. Concentrate on whatever brush you can find from 2 to 10 feet. The hot colors have been the watermelon, watermelon gold and green pumpkin. Early and late bass will likely fall for top water as well. Try a Sammy 100 or and all white Enticer 3/8 ounce buzz bait.

Anglers have GPS Bass fishing locations and a BASS FISHING WEST POINT LAKE book is for sale. Ask ken for a sample. This book is $39.00. Sample just e mail ken@southernfishing.com

LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 7.1 FEET, STAINED & LOW 60’S DEGREES

This Allatoona Bass Fishing report is by Matt Driver, www.proanglerradio.com

Bass fishing is great. Lots of fishing being caught. The worm and jig bite has been solid. Finesse worms like the 6inch big bite squirrel tail and big bite trick stick in green pumpkin. The soft plastic jerk bait is on fire. The alewife 5 inch jerk minnow fisher on a 1/8 on 3/0 jig head on 12lb fluorocarbon is the ticket. Pea gravel and red clay bank on the north end of the lake are most productive. The spawn is in all phases right now from prespawn, spawning and even post spawn. We look for top water to pick up soon.

This Lake Allatoona fishing guides report for striper and hybrid report fishing report has been brought to you exclusively by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service, 770 827 6282. www.firstbiteguideservice.com Lake Allatoona, Georgia email: eidson6260@att.net

Line side fishing is very good. The rivers are really starting to show signs of live. The white bass are at the end of their run. And the hybrids and stripers are starting their spawn migration run up both rivers. The lake is still fishing well and there are still a lot of fish in the main lake. And for people like me that do feel comfortable in skinny water, this is great news. Thread fin shad has been the bait of choose both on the rivers and on the main lake. Planner boards and free lines are working best on the main lake fished in the mouth of the creeks. A long with small pockets off the main lake. The river bite is basically the same. But add a couple of cut bait lines with your spread. Fishing should hit its peak in the next week.

Anglers, we have a book on BASS FISHING LAKE ALLATOONA and we offer GPS 50 coordinates also. Ask for samples of the book and the coordinates from ken@southernfishing.com

LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 1.1 FEET & LOW 60’S

Bass fishing is good. Bass are on the flats on or near beds. Bass should be holding tight this week and to catch them stay back and make a long cast. Use the Spro McStick and work the bait with slow easy retrieve of a fast jerking motion will get the bites. Later in the day the fish are striking while using a steady retrieve. Some will even follow the bait back to the boat. If this happens, speed up your retrieve on your next cast. Shad Raps continue to be a lake favorite this week, especially on the smaller secondary points. Use the trick worms and a 2/0 offset Bass Pro offset on 10 pound Sufix elite line on a spinning reel. This will get a lot of bites and use both bright colors and green pumpkin or June bug.

CLARKS HILL IS FULL, HIGH 60’S DEGREES & STAINED

Bass fishing is good. The water continues to warm and bass are bedding. Locate the bedding areas this week and then find a deep ditch or channel ledge and fish the area with either a Rapala DT6 or a #5 Shad Rap. The bass will strike at any aggressive crank bait now. Up lake in the rivers and up lake creeks, an Enticer 3/8 ounce jig and pig in reds and black combos along with the Uncle Josh matching trailers worked on points and around docks will draw strikes for bass. It’s been better to fish these lures in the same location for a few casts and this can make the better fish strike the lures. Once the lure is in contact with the underwater structure stay in the cover as long as possible. During the mid day period fish any forms of wood. For the larger bass, Zoom green pumpkin rigged with a light pegged sinker. Finding the right color will be the key while using the worms try several colors. Be sure to use a good tough line and Sufix Elite will work well and use a heavy action rod.

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & LOW 60’S

Bass fishing is good. A large quantity of bass are still on the beds. Some have yet to lock on and these bass are being caught in five to seven feet of water on or near secondary points. Finding the small channels leading back into the coves will be a key factor in catching a good limit. Use the Ito Vision 110 jerk bait almost all day. The #5 Shad Rap and Rapala DT4 and Rapala DT6 are a sure bet. Don’t forget to fish the rip rap early in the morning and late in the day. The top water bite is warming up midday especially out on the points and in the small cuts. Chug Bugs, Zara Spooks and Rico’s in shad patterns are all working.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS FULL, CLEAR LOW 70’S

Bass fishing is good. Use Zara Spook Jr. shad top water lures and Storm jerk bait’s lake wide. Bomber crank baits in baby bass, shad and fire tiger colors cast to the banks will get lots of action. Use the stop and go technique and try running these crank baits in the blow downs. A slow retrieve in the lay downs letting the bait float up once it hits the limbs will draw a strike. A Stanley spinner bait in the 3/8 ounce size with white or chartreuse skirts cast to the points and shallow back cover will get the fish to attack this lure. Use slow moving lures and works, Flukes and trick worms are the best baits. The early bite starts on anything in the water in the shallows. All day, use almost any color of Zoom’s trick worm. Skip or cast the bait past the cover and pull the lure and let it drop right into the cover. Use the Enticer spinner baits in the 3/8 ounce size with silver and gold blades in either the willow leaf or Colorado combinations has been working. Never overlook the rivers on this lake and large jigs and huge grubs are deadly.

LAKE GEORGE IS DOWN ONE FOOT, MID 70’S

Bass are shallow and trick worms and medium dark tubes are the best bets around the grass beds as the fish are still very shallow. Go to the clear waters in the very backs of the creeks. Red 1/4 ounce Rat L traps will also work later in the day. Zoom lizards in dark colors are fair and add some scent and dye the tails. Pick up the Alabama rig with small Zoom fluke pearl trailers and work the shallows all day. Zara Spooks, Pop R’s and similar loud top baits will also work. Always try a buzz bait and spinner bait anywhere on the lake or in the creeks. Expect to see shallow fish on the beds all over the lake and even up river in the coves and cuts.

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, STAINED UP THE RIVERS CLEAR ON MAIN LAKE, 65 TO 72 DEGREES

Bass fishing is good. The lake is full. The shad spawn is in full swing. At daylight the bass will be close to bank looking for the spawning bait. Use a spinner bait fished along sea walls and rip rap to target these fish. Work the middle of the coves and main lake creeks. Fish boat docks, wood structure, and sea walls. Work your way to the back of the coves and creeks. Use Shad Raps and small crank bait with rattles fished on sea walls and around docks. Later in the day when the sun gets up move to the docks and fish a shaky head under docks in the same area.

Striper report by Captain Mark Smith, Reel Time guide service. Call 404 803 0741

reeltime@bellsouth.net

Striper fishing is good. The fish are at the dam for the spring run. Some fish are also showing up in the rivers. Live bait fished on down lines along with flat lines and plainer boards will pick up fish. There are also fish showing up mid lake on the humps live bait and spoons will work on these fish.

Crappie fishing is good. The fish are in the back of the coves and creeks and on wood structure. Use minnows and jigs fished into the timber. You can also troll in the middle to the back of the creeks as some of the fish have moved back out of the spawning areas into deeper water.

Make sure you stop by Sugar Creek Marina and pick up your spoons and all your tackle needs. You can also book your Crappie and striper trips with Reel Time Guide Service at 404 803 0741 or reeltime@bellsouth.net

LAKE SINCLAIR IS FULL, 69 73 DEGREES, RIVERS AND CREEKS ARE STAINED, LOWER LAKE IS CLEAR, BY MATT HENRY, CALL 478 451 0167 ext 1215 (SINCLAIR MARINA)

For more fishing reports on other Georgia lakes, see www.southernfishing.com.

Bass fishing is great. The majority of the bass seem to be spawning but some pre spawn and post spawn fish can be found. Soft plastic baits fished slowly in the spawning pockets have been most consistent. We have been catching a lot of good fish off of stumps, grass, and dock walkways in 3 to 5 feet in the back half of the spawning pockets. Texas rigged Zoom lizards and weightless Zoom trick worms have been best when targeting spawning fish around the stumps. Dark colors will work best as the water is still really stained in most areas of the lake. Pre-spawn and post-spawn fish can still be caught in these same spawning pockets by covering a lot of water with a chartreuse Buckeye Lures spinnerbait with Colorado blades or by flipping a Buckeye Lures mop jig around the dock posts on the sides of the pockets. A black buzz bait or Zoom horny toad will fool a few big ones early and late targeting wood or grass in the pockets.

JACKSON LAKE IS FULL, STAINED & MID 60’S

Bass fishing is good. The bass are biting on a variety of baits. Most are shallow at 2 to 8 feet deep in coves and along main river and creek banks. Although many of the larger fish have finished spawning, others are doing so now. The best bet for daylight fishing is to find spawning shad that have bass chasing them. The shad dance is occurring on most areas of the lake right now. Shad are spawning around sea walls, blow downs, grass, rip rap, or most anything that contacts the surface. The bass are there shallow too. Use Tiny Torpedo’s, Chug Bugs, original #7 Rapala, spinner baits, Flukes, buzz baits and crank baits. Carolina rigs are catching fish along cove banks and on a few points. Try a 5 inch Zoom Lizard in green pumpkin on an 18 leader with a half ounce weight. A Trick worm is working rigged weightless with a swivel about 8 above the worm. White and Methiolate have both worked the last couple days. Fish this rig around docks and other shallow cover. Small crank baits like a Shad Rap RS are catching fish also.
