LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 3.3 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’S

This Lake Lanier Bass report is from Jimbo Mathley. www.jimboonlanier.com 770 542 7764

Bass fishing is good. The change in weather has been welcome on the lake. It has been nice to see some cooler weather, and the surface water temp has dropped 3 or more degrees this week. Not much has changed in terms of the fishing, however. We are still getting some top water action both in the mornings, as well as in the afternoon over deeper brush when the sun is up, but this bite has certainly declined. We continue to start most mornings working schooling fish that are roaming in 20 to 60 feet of water near points and humps. Top water such as a Sammy have worked, as well as a SuperSpin thrown into the blow ups. This bite is very random. You just need to be in the right area and throw at the blow ups quickly. If the hard baits don’t work, try a fluke and work it fast.  After the first hour, we switch to focusing on the brush in 25 to 40 feet of water with a drop shot. I have been using the new Lanier Baits 6″ worm options in Candy, Passion, and Obsession lately and have found them to work very well. The afternoon bite has been much better lately. If you can stand the heat, get out there and work the areas around the deeper brush on deeper humps and you will have success. A SuperSpin has been working out on the deeper humps as well. Just another option in case you get tired of the drop shot. A jig and a shaky head will produce in those same depths on some days as well. I have dates open in August as well as September, and September is filling up quickly! Here is what I have left open for August: 25, 26, 27 Call to book your August or September trip NOW! Now is a great time to learn the deep drop shot, and in September the top water and swimbait bite should be in full force! Thanks to all and tight lines!

This Striper fishing report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishon .com

Striper fishing is very good. WOW what a crazy week! We went from a condition that saw the lake temperature drop three degrees almost overnight with a strong east wind and the fishing went from very good to fair. After a few days of continued east winds and fair fishing the weather changed to southwest winds, rain and thunderstorms. The fishing went from fair to outstanding. It is unusual to see weather changes affect the fishing conditions to this extent in the summer. Fishing has been very good all summer and we were probably due to a three day pause in the bite. Every technique is now working! Down rod fishing with Blueback Herring 30 to 90 feet deep, trolling with lead core line 8 to 9 colors back with a 1 ounce buck tail jig and the umbrella rig with a 3 ounce jig frame and 9 one ounce buck tail jigs 150 feet back. One technique to try when the fishing is slow to bite is to “power reel”. Power reeling is simply an approach used to try to trigger a reaction bite by dropping a bait down past the fish and reeling it up through the fish. An example would be if the fish are at 35 feet, drop your bait to 50 feet and reel it up to 20. Vary the speed you reel up from lighting fast to a standard retrieve. If you are using a down rod with a herring to power reel, shorten your leader to no more than 2 feet to avoid knots in your leader. You can also use a 2 ounce Capt. Mack’s buck tail jig with a Herring or shad body for power reeling. Like last week, the fish are in deeper water in the creek mouths and off the river channel. Six Mile Creek, Four Mile Creek, Flowery Branch, Orr Creek, Flat Creek and main lake deep water pockets are all good places to start your search. The water temperature is in the mid 80’s. The water is heavily stained in the backs of the creeks and lightly stained on the main lake. The lake is 3.5 feet below full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404-561-2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www. laniercrappieanglers.com

Crappie fishing is fair. Your best bet for catching fish is early in the morning, on deep docks and deep brush piles. Expect this pattern to remain the same until you see a combination of a change in the temperature and cooler rain. This will bring the fish to shallower structure thus making them easier to catch. This is a good time of the year to work on your brush piles, which will give you more spots to fish when the weather cools and the bite heats up!

Be safe on the water as the lake continues to be crowded! Wear your life jacket, it can save your life!

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 1.7 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is good. Fish are really spread out in two groups. The top water bite is on fire first thing in the morning on points and lay downs. Buzz baits, Spooks, and Pop R’s are producing when cast very close to cover and then slowly worked back to the boat. There are a few May fly’s left going up the river that are producing some better fish early in the day as well. Pitch jigs close to overhanging limbs with bream present. These fish have been highly pressured so work the bait slowly. The strike zone will be in the first five feet of the overhanging limbs. Once the sun is high focus on docks and lay downs near the mouth of pockets with green pumpkin a Z Man floating worm. The Z Man floating worm will stand up on a 1/8 or 3/16 ounce shaky head so do not be afraid to let this bait soak to catch larger fish. The best points and lay downs are from the 109 bridge north going up the river. During generation periods use deep diving crankbaits on humps and road beds. You can load the boat quick with some really heavy weights during these periods of generation.

LAKE ALLATOONA IS FULL, STAINED & LOW 90’S BY MATT DRIVER www.5x3nation.com

Bass fishing is slow and most anglers are fishing at night due to the heat. In the evening, you can fish small top water baits such as a Rico or Jackall SK Pop Grande. Be sure to use shad colors. Fish these baits on main lake points or around the shady places on the steep rock walls. As the evening progresses, switch to a big crank bait like a Spro Little John DD or a Norman DD 22. A good color choice is Nasty Shad. Fish this crank bait on the steeper points. The best option for catching fish right now is to fish any brush or cover 15 to 25 feet deep with a 6 inch Robo Worm. Good colors seem to be Red Crawler and Martin’s Madness. You can also cast a Jig in these same areas. Fish a smaller jig such a Bass Patrol or the locally made Spanky’s jig.

This striper and hybrid report fishing report has been brought to you exclusively by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service, 770 827 6282. www.firstbiteguideservice.com Lake Allatoona, Georgia email: eidson6260@att.net

Line side fishing is great and the summer pattern is in full swing. It’s time for the down lines, umbrella rigs and down riggers. Shad are very hard to keep a live right with the heat every day. It avoid a bad day, take 24 shiners with you when you head to the water. The south end of the lake is by far the best bite on the lake. Live bait fished off of any main lake point will work, Also, the humps in the mouth of all the main creeks are holding fish and there is a good evening bite at the dam. The trolling bite is great for the bigger fish. We have had some really good fish this week pulling umbrella rigs near the mouth of Stamps Creek. The top water bite we have had the few weeks is gone and the full moon phase is the culprit. But we look for it to pick back up by the middle of next week.

LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 3.3 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is fair. The top water bite has been fair at daybreak but after that anglers are fishing a lot of docks, especially those close to the main lake channels. Try to find those that have fifteen to twenty feet of water on the front end of the dock and you might even try sitting in deeper water fishing them. Another good idea for catching those “Dog Days” bass is to break out those jigging spoons and fish the pylons under the bridges. A variety of fish, including bass, will suspend under the bridges during July and August as the sun bears down on the water. Vertical jigging and fishing with a weightless Fluke with a light presentation will catch some of these bass. Ten pound test line will do, but I like to down size to eight pound test on a 6 or 6 1/2 foot spinning rod with a medium action tip. This will prevent you from over working the bait. Also check out the long run out points that drop off sharply into deeper water. Use Carolina Rigs and 1/4 ounce jigs while fishing those main lake points.

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.2 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is fair. It is now off shore time as the fish go to the summer pattern. Top water Chug Bugs are still working early off the points and in the mouth of the larger coves. Fish the upper end around Pickens Creek and look for some schoolers. In the very back of Pickens Creek and at the bridge at Sanders Ferry there are all spots. Use the flukes and the 85 Sammy and anything is shad patterns. Beaver Dam Creek from the mouth to about midway back is still producing nice bass. Early in the morning start off with the top water Chugs and alternate with suspending Shad Raps in the natural shad color. One substitute for the RS Shad Rap will be the no.5 jointed Shad Rap. Either one is producing but make sure you throw the natural shad color. Work the islands and all the points at the mouth of Beaver Dam and even up the Savannah under the rail road ridge for about a mile. No need to travel any further than a couple of miles from the 72 ramp for some good fishing. Later in the day, many anglers are relying on soft plastics like Zoom finesse worms. Rig them on a 3/16 ounce bullet weight Texas rig on a medium heavy rod and 12 pound Sufix Elite line. Ten pound can be substituted for the twelve. Isolate targets like large rocks and wood when throwing the Texas rig.

CLARKS HILL IS DOWN 3.5 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’s

Bass fishing has during the heat of the day. Bass are relating to deep water and are coming up to feed during the major feeding times. During the mid day feeding period there is some surface activity. The Alabama rig is still getting some fish but they are usually smaller bass. Use the Pop R and the Rico in shad and take an olive green Fat Free Shad and work it with short jerks all the way back to the boat. Some of these bass will break the surface in twenty to forty feet of water so don’t be afraid to cast off the other side of the boat into deeper water. Locating a long narrow run out point on your map will be a good place to start fishing the first thing in the morning. Also continue to fish those stump rolls in twelve to twenty feet of water with big spinner baits, Rapala DT16’s, jigs or Carolina rigs. Getting the crank baits down and letting them bounce off any structure will usually trigger a strike.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN 1 FOOT, SLIGHT STAIN & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is fair to good and there is a good am top water bite with Spooks and buzz baits. The river fish have been fair as the current is moving daily with all the upriver runoff. Bright large Mann’s crank baits on the sand bars mid river has been fair and dig the bottom with the baits. In the clear creeks, buzz baits and spinner baits along with rats style lures on and over the grass beds will work. Large Zoom Magnum trick worms in June bug are fair on the creek sand bars with a light weight. Senko’s in bright colors on a large worm hook with n weight will work as well. Some anglers are on the lake after dark using black buzz baits and large 10 inch black Culprit worms in the creeks.

LAKE GEORGE IS FULL, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is good early and late but the day fishing is tough. Wear the paint off a Bandit crank bait on the shallow creek ledges. As the mid day the bite, slows find the mid lake humps on the lower end of the lake and use the larger spinner baits and Zoom u tails worms in 10 to 12 feet of water. Hit the grass early with white buzz bait and then head to the ledges later in the day. The Sebile Swimmers in the shad patterns will also work and use a slow steady retrieve. If all else fails, get out the Zoom pumpkinseed lizard and work the 4 foot leader with the Carolina Keepers and use a full one ounce sinker.

WEISS LAKE IS FULL, CLEAR, 83 85 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair and most bass are deep on their summer pattern, Weiss had a big Algae bloom over the past few weeks and it has started depleting the oxygen levels in the lake, so most fish are going to be lethargic, Jigs, Carolina rigged plastics, deep running crank baits and big willow leaf spinner baits slow rolled, are catching fish, the top water bite is on early and late also. With the Cool front moving thru, the water temps are dropping slowly and some fish might start moving shallower to the cooler water.

Crappie fishing is fair and they are in deeper water on cover in the flats and the river channel ledges. Spider rigging with live minnows over cover in 12 to 16 feet of water is producing some fair fishing. Night fishing under lights and on lighted docks is producing the best crappie fishing.

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, LIGHT STAIN UP THE RIVERS THE MAIN LAKE, RICHLAND CREEK CLEAR, 85 88 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair. At first light start with a buzz bait and fish it along the sea walls in the mid lake area of the lake. This will last for the first hour of day light. Fish are on the humps on the south end of the lake and in Richland Creek. A Carolina rig worm fished on these humps will draw a strike. You can also use a large crank bait and work the down lake side of the humps. You can also find some fish under deep boat docks. I would target these docks early in the mornings. Shaky heads have been the best producers on these deep docks.

Striper report by Captain Mark Smith, Reel Time guide service. Call 404 803 0741 reeltime@bellsouth.net

Striper fishing is slow. There is a top water bite for the first two hours of day light. Use a popping cork or an inline spinner. Another good choice is a silver or white spoon fished into the schools that are blowing up on the top.

Crappie fishing is good. The fish are in the mouths of the creek and large coves. They have moved into the timber and you can find them with your Lowrance in the top of the trees. When you find them drop a live minnow into the school and start catching.

Make sure you stop by Sugar Creek Marina and pick up your spoons and all your tackle needs. You can also book your Crappie and striper trips with Reel Time Guide Service at 404 803 0741 or reeltime@bellsouth.net

LAKE SINCLAIR IS FULL, 89 DEGREES, STAINED UP RIVER, MAIN LAKE CLEAR

Bass fishing is good. Top water baits continue to produce a few fish, including large bass, during early morning. Expect only 1 to 4 blow ups per morning for the angler that chunks top water baits the first 2 hours. Most bites are along main river banks, some around no apparent cover, while others are around blow downs, stumps, grass, rocks, and seawalls. The key to success is determining the best type bait, which can change daily. Some proven baits are buzz baits, Pop R’s, Chug Bug’s, Spooks, Torpedo, and Dalton Special. Flukes and weightless Trick worms haven’t produced recently, but are worth trying. Rip rap and bridge supports continue to hold a few bass. The points of rip rap on both sides of bridges can hold feeding fish, especially during power generation. Crank baits, lightweight Texas rigs, and jig head and worm rigs have been the producers. Fishing docks and boat houses has gotten real tough. The best chance of success is to scale down to smaller soft plastics and fish each dock very slowly. A few bass can still be caught by finding them in open water along underwater points, humps, and ledges. Depths are mostly from 10 to 15 feet, although depths may be shallower way up the rivers or deeper in the lower lake area. Deep crank baits and Carolina rigs are the mainstays. Fat Free Shads in size ¾ ounce (#7) have been good, along with Bill Norman DD22’s and the cedar shad Poe’s 400. Both chartreuse and shad patterns have worked for any of the baits. Zoom Trick worms in green pumpkin, green pumpkin red, and June bug have worked well on the Carolina rig.

JACKSON LAKE IS DOWN 1.1 FEET, MID 80’S & CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair. Depending on the conditions and what is going on with the food chain you may find some better than average summer fishing. Fish deep structure in or near the main lake, or seek cooler water up the rivers. Target main lake points, the bluffs any hump at 12 to 15 feet with brush, bridge pilings and docks. Put to use shakey heads, heavy compact jigs, and deep running crankbaits through the day. Hot weather has many fish hunkered down in deep water, suspended, or roaming with shad in open water. Early in the day, throw a Rico or other top water bait on the deep sea walls or at open water opportunities. We may see more Mayfly hatches resulting in shallow fishing opportunities. Bream move up on the insects and big bass move up on the bream. The hatches are off and on, but the possibility exists that we will see some more hatches. When the hatch concentrates, it is a prime opportunity to catch quality fish in shallow warm water. Many baits may catch them, but top water fishing with a Rico or Pop R can be hard to beat. Also try swimming a green jig. Look up the rivers, late in the afternoon for possible hatches. Good fish can bite at night on the lights.
