LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 2.3 FEET, CLEAR & UPER 80’S

Spotted bass fishing is good. There is a good top water bite both in the mornings, as well as in the afternoon when the sun is up. We continue to start most mornings working schooling fish that are roaming in 5 to 40 feet of water near points and humps. Top water such as a chug bug and Gun Fish have worked, as well as a SuperSpin thrown into the blow ups. After the first hour, we switch to focusing on the brush in 20 to 30 feet of water with a drop shot, Chattahoochee Jig or Davis Shaky Head. We are targeting brush in that depth range on main lake points and humps, as well as in the mouths of the major creeks. We are also starting to get some bigger drop shot fish in the 30 to 35 foot range as the fish start to move out deeper, a normal progression for this time of year and the hot weather we have been experiencing. To the contrary, we have found some shallower fish on rocky points some days, and these fish seem to fall for a Shaky Head or Jig quickly. Once late morning hits, we then have switched back to the top water bite over brush, as well as the drop shot and jig. Here is what I have open for trips in July: 27 and 28. I am also booking for August as well. Call to book your July or August trip now and don’t forget to register for the August 15 Seminar! I expect the top water, drop shot, jig, and Superspin to be the main techniques for August.

REMINDER: I am excited to announce that my next Seminar has been set. Saturday, August 15, 2015 will be the next installment in the Jimbo Seminar Series. The last one was very well attended as we maxed out space with over 100 people, so we have found a larger venue to host the next event. We will focus on techniques for fall and Early Winter Fishing on Lanier, and will cover key topics such as: Brush Fishing, Top water and Swimbaits, Deepwater Dropshot, SuperSpin in the ditches, Effective Use of Crankbaits in the fall, Spoon Fishing, Early Winter Jig Fishing, along with Lure and Tackle choices with examples for every technique. We will have more vendors as well as some great door prizes and raffles. Refreshments will be served. Seminar will start at 8:30 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM. Doors open at 7:30 AM and we will have a mid morning break. Also, for those interested and to make sure everyone’s questions get answered, I will host a special post seminar round table from 12:45 PM 1:30 PM for anyone that wants to stay afterwards. The event will be held at Grace Chapel here in Cumming, which is conveniently located off Exit 13 from GA 400 at 6755 Majors Road. Call me direct or email me to register. 770 542 7764 or jim@laniermapped.com. Cost is $89 if you register and pay by August 1, 2015, or $115 at the door. Can’t wait to see you all there for what promises to be another outstanding event that is sure to get you prepared for the awesome fall fishing on Lanier!

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishon .com

Striper fishing is good. Not much has changed this week. I have had a number of questions on summer lake stratification this week and I thought it warranted a little more explanation. The lake is stratified and the thermocline is at 25 to 27 feet. Summer lake stratification is the process of a lake separating into three layers: a top warm layer (currently at 86 degrees), a transition layer (approximately 2 foot in depth) and a deep cold water layer currently in the mid 50 degrees). The transition layer is referred to as the thermocline. Because the Striped Bass is temperature sensitive and cannot survive in 80 degree water getting your baits down below the thermocline is critical. You should ensure you are fishing your Blueback herring at 30 to 80 feet deep. A lot of you have line counter reels which are a great tools. However, they will be off depending on how full you spool your line. To calibrate your line counter zero your reel at surface level and drop it down to 30 feet. Use you electronics to verify the actual depth. Repeat this calibration at 50 and 80 feet. You now have a good feel for your line counter accuracy. This may sound trivial but the difference of 4 or 5 feet can be the difference between getting bit and not getting bit. There are still some fish in pockets on the main lake and creek mouths but more fish have been showing up over the river and creek channels. If you want to fish while you are searching, both umbrella rigs and lead core trolling is working. Set the Umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 7 to 8 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The water temperature is in mid to high 80’s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 2.0 feet below full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www. laniercrappieanglers.com

Crappie fishing remains fair to good. You may ask, “How significant is water temperature?” When we report a water temperature, it references the surface temperature. Fish make the necessary adjustments and move to deeper water where the temperature change is significant. Some fish move into natural timber, and some move to deeper brush piles, both those around docks or stand alone. So if you are fishing a private pond or reservoir that holds crappie, you will obviously fish the deepest part of the water. On Lake Lanier, you simply move to deeper brush piles. The crappie are currently holding on brush piles in 25 to 30 foot depths. The challenge that you will have is to feel the bite. The deeper they are, the less noticeable the bite will be. This is the reason high visibility line is important. I switched to 2 pound test high visibility line. Both soft body and hair jigs are working equally well, and chartreus color is producing best. One sixteenth ounce jig head is recommended to get your jig to the depth needed. Helpful tip: if you don’t get hung occasionally, you are not getting deep enough. Your Lowrance Down Scan is a must. Early morning until about 10:00 am is the best bite. However if you want to beat the heat, night fishing remains fair underneath bridges, with live bait recommended. Be safe on the water as the lake continues to be crowded, and wear your life jacket, it can save your life!

WEST POINT LAKE IS FULL, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is fair. This time of year there is very little change in pattern. Fish have committed to deep water cover and will remain there for the next few weeks. Go back to Bass fishing has been poor. Fish still remain to be scattered with the rise and fall of outside temperatures. Do not look for fish to move far from some of their shallow main lake locations and move on the deeper end of blow downs. Most fish we are catching are on the end of blow downs in twelve to fifteen feet of water. For these locations use a ¼ ounce Texas rigged Zoom Ole Monster in green pumpkin. During the summer months the metabolic rate of fish are at its highest and prefer larger baits. This does not mean that fish are chasing down baits, but means fish will look for larger prey. Continue to use a slow presentation working the bait as long as thirty seconds in cover.

LAKE ALLATOONA IS FULL, STAINED & LOW 90’S BY MATT DRIVER

The Bass Fishing report is from Matt Driver, www.proanglerradio.com

Bass fishing is slow. Fish are deep with the best concentration is around 18 to 25 feet deep. Drop shot finesse worms and shad baits like the jointed jerk minnow are working good. Another key is very light line and heavier drop shot weight, 6 pound test Sunline Sniper fished vertically around brush using sonar is a good tactic. Fish are scattered and size has been low. Stamps creek, and north is most productive. There is some schooling activity in the evening especially after a storms. The Spro Dawg and BB jerk minnow, and Zara Spook are my weapons of choice. It takes a long cast to get the bass to bite and not spook. We are using 10 pound Sunline SX1 braid and a 7’6 med heavy spinning rod for optimal distance. Don’t try to get the boat to close that will be gone. And for the kids, the bream are biting worms and crickets around boat dock and bluff walls in the shade. You will need to use the Lowrance Structure Scan and Down Scan equipment to find the structure and find the fish.

This Lake Allatoona striper and hybrid fishing guides report has been brought to you exclusively by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service, 770 827 6282. www.firstbiteguideservice.com Lake Allatoona, Georgia email: eidson6260@comcast.net

Line side fishing is outstanding. The down line bite is in full swing and the Hybrids are just killing live bait right now. Our boats are having very good mornings. On most days we are seeing 20 to 50 fish per boat on half day trips. Shad is still out fishing shiners, but the shiner bite is probably the best we have seen in years. But with that being said shad is still out producing shiners 5 to 1. The better bite is on the south end of the lake. Stamp Creek, Cooper Branch, Iron Hill, Red Top and Clark Creek are all fishing well right now. There is also a bite mid lake but it just doesn’t compare to the bite on the south end. The trolling bite is also starting to pick up. And it is hard to beat an umbrella rig loaded with 9 1/2 ounce jigs fished 100 feet out at 2.4 miles per hour. The top water bite is also starting to get good early and then again right before sun down in eye site of the dam.

LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 1.4 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is slow. Use a 1/4 ounce jig in the 10 to 20 foot range and the heavy rock ledges with some scattered wood is working along with main lake or river points. Try the crank bait Bandit 200 in root beer. Also try the Mad Flash Wiggle Wart in the Mossy Craw, Tennessee Shad and Rusty Craw colors. The best bite has been from daylight until about 10:30 a.m. After that it gets tough so the drop shot rigs and Carolina rigs are catching a good many bass. Also down the baits and then fish them really slowly. Most of the bites are no more than soft feeling added weight as you work slowly across the bottom. They key will be to find deep ledges or pockets near the channels and make sure there is plenty of rocks and other structure in the area you fish. Bridges are producing some keeper bass and use the small split shot weights and the four inch finesse worms slowly fall down next to the pylon. Drop shot rigs will also work there all day.

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR & MID 80’S

Bass fishing is fair but the heat of the day pushes the bait and the bass to deeper water. Spend all day with a variety of crank baits especially early to mid day. The best bait has been the Rapala DT10 and Bandit fire tiger crank baits. Making long casts into shallow water at the islands and points that have channel markers closest to them. The bass will set up just out of the current. On the deeper points try using the DT10 in a shad and baby bass color. Use the Jointed Shad Raps on the sides of the points and on the flats. Use a long rod at 6’6″ or a 7 foot medium action cranking rod filled with 10 pound Sufix Elite line. Keep a small Zara Spook ready and make a few casts to any point or ledge before leaving the area.

CLARKS HILL IS DOWN 1.8 FEET, CLEAR & MID 80’s

Bass fishing is fair and the fish are widely scattered all over the lake. The pattern of one day being excellent and then the next being only fair continues. This on and off pattern will continue for a few more weeks. The top water bite is fair from safe light until shortly after sunrise. Use a variety of Gun Fish and Rapala Skitter Props to entice the bite. Some small schooling bait fish are still rising in shallow waters and off the points early in the mornings. Make sure to have a top water bait rigged and ready to cast when you spot the bait fish. Bass seem to be a little more active up in the rivers than they are on the main lake. Current is the key factor here. Slow crank a Rapala DT6 or the Bandit 200 in the bream or shad patterns. Also try the RS Shad Rap in a crawfish pattern and keep your boat moving. Watch the points mid lake as the bass will force some shad up to the rocks and they will take a small popping lure like the Pop R.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN 1 FOOT, SLIGHT STAIN & LOW 80’S BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing is good. Despite the heat, the fish are still biting. There is still a good early morning and late evening top water bite with frogs in the grass. Fish any topped out grass beds near deep water with a 3.5″ Big Bite Baits Top Toad in any light color. Swim the frog over the tops of the holes in the grass and wait for explosive strikes. Always have a 6″ Big Bite Baits Jerk Minnow rigged up for missed strikes. Later in the day when the sun heats the water up, move to either Spring Creek or main lake river ledges and look for deep grass. The best spots are near the bends and points of the creek or river ledges. Type of grass will either be milfoil or Hydrilla. Fish these areas with either a Texas rigged 10″ Big Bite Baits Kriet Tail worm in watermelon seed, or a Carolina rigged Big Bite Baits 6″ Finesse worm in watermelon seed. Fish the Texas rig on a 1/4 ounce Tungsten Sinker and the Carolina rig on a 1 ounce bullet style lead.

LAKE GEORGE IS FULL, CLEAR & HIGH 80’S

Bass fishing is fair. The grass bite has been slow. Shallow grass early along with shallow river ledges during the day with a small buzz bait. The bite has been day to day so be prepared to move a lot to find the fish and stay cool. Some top water action has been good early, but it’s about as reliable as the ledge bite. The crank bait bite has been poor at best and with all the bait running around it is too easy for the fish to find plenty to eat. Run the Fish Head Spin or the Dude with a small Zoom Fluke trailer on 1 0 pound test line and bump the bottom with these baits. Working the Texas rigs in shallow cover ranging from 5 to 10 feet has been the best tactic and if you don’t dead stick the worm in the tree for a minute or so they won’t touch it.

WEISS LAKE IS AT 0 Feet 1 Inches BELOW FULL POOL AND CLEAR AND 85 87 DEGREES

From: Mark Collins Service www.markcollins service.com 256 779 3387

Bass fishing is good and most bass are on a deep summer pattern in 6 12 feet of water, on humps, points and river and creek channel ledges. A Carolina rigged Senko in June bug and green pumpkin is working great. Stroking a 1/2 ounce jig on the ledges in Little River and the Chattooga River is catching some great bass. The 1/2 ounce spinner baits and deep running crank baits are catching fish also. The top water bite has been good for the last month, early and late around sea walls and deeper banks. The upper Chattooga River above Cobia’s bridge is loaded with shad and the Spotted Bass are feeding on them heavy. Spinner baits and crank baits and a Carolina rigged Senko worm, fished on the edges of the river channel near the schools of shad are producing some good spotted bass. Some bass are still being caught flipping docks with a jig or tube bait. The canal is producing some good fish on points any time they are producing power. Down sizing your baits this time of year will usually produce a lot more fish due to all the small fresh hatched Shad 1 1/2 to 2 inches long.

Striper fishing is good and they are starting to be caught at the Cave hole in Little River on live shad down lined about 8 feet and flat lined, they are also being caught in the Chattooga River. They are also being caught in the canal when they are generating power. Little Spring Creek is also producing some good Stripers on live shad.

Crappie fishing is fair and the crappie are on creek and river channel ledges and brush in the flats in 12 to 16 feet of water on brush and stumps. Spider rigging with live minnows is the way to catch the deep Crappie. A few crappie are still being caught shooting docks with jigs. Crappie are being caught under lights at night in 8 to 12 feet of water on the river channel in Little River and off of docks under lights at night.

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, STAINE UP THE RIVERS LIGHT STAIN ON MAIN LAKE RICHLAND CREEK CLEAR,85 91 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair. There is a top water bite on the deep sea walls at first light. A small Zara spook fished slowly down the sea wall will draw a strike. This will only last for the first hr of daylight. Then start on deep water boat docks from 10 to 15 feet deep and work a shaky head under these docks. The mid lake area of the lake has been the most productive over the past week. If Georgia Power starts pulling water move to the bridge rip raps with a crank bait or spinner bait and work the down lake side of the bridge. Fish are starting to show up on the humps on the south end of the lake and in Richland Creek. A Carolina rig worm fished on these humps will draw a strike. You can also use a large crank bait and work the down lake side of the humps. We are in a summer pattern so start thinking deep.

Striper report by Captain Mark Smith, Reel Time guide service. Call 404 803 0741 reeltime@bellsouth.net

Striper fishing is good. There is a good top water bite for the first two hours of day light. Use a popping cork or an inline spinner. Another good choice is a silver or white spoon fished into the schools that are blowing up on the top.

Crappie fishing is good. The fish are in the mouths of the creek and large coves. They have moved into the timber and you can find them with your Lowrance in the top of the trees. When you find them drop a live minnow into the school and start catching.

Make sure you stop by Sugar Creek Marina and pick up your spoons and all your tackle needs. You can also book your Crappie and striper trips with Reel Time Guide Service at 404 803 0741 or reeltime@bellsouth.net

LAKE SINCLAIR IS FULL, 86 DEGREES, STAINED UP RIVER, MAIN LAKE CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair but it is an early and late day bite. Some fish are still hitting on top first thing in the morning. Most fish continue to be located along main river banks and a short distance inside the mouth of coves. Most any top water lure can work, but Pop R’s, Chug Bugs, and buzz baits have all scored well recently. A few fish are hitting spinner baits, mainly around blow downs and grass. A weightless Zoom Trick worm in white could also draw a couple bites from the same cover. Docks and brush piles are still holding a few bass that are hitting mostly soft plastics. Depths are varying from about 5 to 12 feet deep. Rip rap is still producing bass especially during power generation. Crank baits like a Rapala DT10 and Fat Free Shad #6 have been the primary baits of choice. Lightweight Texas rigs and jig head and worm rigs will produce a few fish during slack water periods. Fish these baits along the rip rap and along the bridge supports. Crank baits can also be the ticket at times, mainly during current flows. Some good choices are Poe’s 400, Fat Free Shad #7, Mann’s 20 Plus, and DD22’s. Most any chartreuse combination should work.

JACKSON LAKE IS FULL, 80’S & CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair on worms and jigs on the trees and docks. Concentrate on stumps on the points and run the all white Fat Free Shad crank bait and crank them really fast. Then use Texas rigged Zoom red shad or Culprit black shad worm and peg the sinker and swim this bait right by the heavy structure and then drop it right nest the stumps. The bass are holding on summer locations including main lake and secondary creek points. Start the day with a slow moving bait and a Zoom pumpkinseed lizard on a short Carolina rig. Do not fish the bait too fast. The use a watermelon trick worm tight on cover after the sun warms the coves and docks. Then try the Lucky Craft 3/8 ounce spinner bait. Slow roll this lure on the banks. It’s best to keep the spinner bait as close to the wood and docks. Up lake, work this same lure on thick bank cover. The blue pumpkin Culprit lizard on a Texas rig is very good on docks and points. Add a Venom glass rattle in the lizard. Anytime of the day use a green trick worm and cast around docks down lake and let it sink out of sight. A dark Strike King jig in black or browns and a crawfish Uncle Josh will catch some fish and swim the baits off the wood and then drop them.
