LAKE LANIER IS DOWN .89 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & HIGH 50’S

This report brought to you by Jimbo on Lanier 770 542 7764 www.jimboonlanier.com

The fishing on Lake Lanier this past week has been excellent. A wake bait has been our first choice in the mornings. The focus with these baits should be fairly shallow on flats and shallower rocky points and humps as well. When the wake bait bite slows down, switch to a worm on a 1/8 ounce Davis Shaky Head in these same areas. Focus on points at the mouths of spawning pockets and on secondary points as well. A drop shot rig with a 4″ worm cast to steep rock banks and points has again been productive this past week. Work the rig like a shaky head and watch for light bites. The fluke bite has slowed a bit this week. When it is on, focus on shallow wood such as blowdowns and twitch the bait slowly with 3 second pauses. Shallower, long running flat points are holding fish as well. Often these fish can be found in the 8 10 foot depth ranges on top of these points. Work a Chattahoochee Jig or shaky head worm slowly on these areas. A jerkbait has been productive on these shallower rocky points as well. Try a straight retrieve with this bait if the jerk, jerk, pause cadence does not work. Again, other than early morning, wind is important for this bite. The Largemouth are up shallow all around the lake. Look in the backs of creeks and pockets to find these critters. Docks in these areas are a good bet for these fish. A number of lures can work depending on the conditions, but all the normal fare are good choices. Here is what I have remaining open April: 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 26, and 27. The spots are on fire.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing continues to be very good. The fish are being caught lake wide on points and flats half way back in the creeks, main lake humps and reef markers. There is an early morning and late afternoon bite with Blueback Herring and Gizzard Shad on free lines and planner boards. However if it is cloudy the fish have been biting all day. Fish your planner boards with single split shot 35 to 50 feet behind the boards and set your free lines at 70 to 100 feet behind the boat. Keep your trolling motor speed between .6 and 1.0 miles per hour. Expect the bite to slow when the sun gets up on those blue bird sky days. In this case, move to deeper water, slow your presentation and deploy a couple of down rods in addition to your free lines. We have had some reports of a night bite with Bombers on main lake and creek mouth points. Get out your Red Fin as we have also had some reports of a top water bite. The Umbrella rig is working. Set your Umbrella rigs at 70 to 90 feet behind the boat and pull at 2.6 to 3.3 MPH. Chestatee River and the creeks up the Chestatee have been the hot spots this past week. The lake temperature is in the low to mid 60’s and the water is clear on the main lake and lightly stained in the backs of the creeks. The lake is ½ foot below full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

With the cool nights, water temperature is still holding around 63 degrees. Fishing remains strong. There is plenty of evidence to support that the spawn is still underway. We are catching fish that are full of eggs, and are also catching those that have already spawned. The fishing pattern is definitely not the norm. The docks that we are targeting now generally hold fish only in spring during the spawn. If you think you are in the back of a creek or the back of a pocket that could be a good spawning area, look for these signs: weed lines partially protruding from the water, and willow trees along the banks and in the shallows. You can fish those areas with a jig or a minnow under a cork. However, you should also pay close attention to nearby docks in 5 to12 foot depths. Since you are fishing shallows, your best choice jig will be the 1/32 or 1/24 ounce jig head. If the area has a flat bottom between the spawning ground and the docks, it would be a perfect place to try your long line trolling method using a double rig with curly tails. Use different colors, and if you find you are getting more bites on one color, switch to that color. A few fish are also being caught on blow downs, although the blow down bite has been very inconsistent. Your biggest challenge for this time of year is the wind which may force you to use a heavier jig head. There are a number of fishermen competing for the same fish, so if you feel like you should be getting bites and you’re not, chances are the spot has recently been fished. So keep moving and try different spots. Wear your life jacket it can save your life!

We have the LOWRANCE Gen 3 Touch and 3D NEW Lowrance Technology on our boat. Bring any HDS machine only to Lake Lanier and learn it ALL in one day. Call Ken for details.

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 3.5 FEET STAINED & LOW 70’S

Bass fishing has been good. Fish have begun spawning. This has been a week for the soft plastics like a Zoom lizard on a light Carolina rig and the trick worms or creature baits. Work the isolated cover and depressions. These fish are most likely relating to small ditches waiting to pull up for the spawn. A light Carolina Rig can also be effective in these same areas. My best areas have been from Wehadkee creek north to the 109 bridge.

SEE NOTICE FROM THE CORP OF ENGINEERS BELOW.

From the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Due to recent heavy rains, excess sediment deposits have pushed down from the Chattahoochee River leaving silt formations in the lake channel thus narrowing the navigation channel north of the Georgia Highway 219 river bridge. This area is between Georgia Park and Ringer Park. In addition, a large sandbar has formed along the west side of the river channel. Too properly mark the river channel, red and green buoys will be replaced with mid channel buoys (black and white vertically stripped) which identify the center of the channel. Boaters should navigate near these buoys to ensure deeper water. Shoal markers will be installed to identify the sandbar. Boaters should proceed with caution in this stretch of river and always be on the lookout for floating debris.

LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 2.2 FEET, 60’S CLEARING

This bass fishing report is from Matt Driver 404 456 6094 www.proanglerradio.com

Bass fishing is great. The recent rain and storms have littered the water with pine straw and leave but the fish are still biting. The weight less Jerk Minnow bite has pick up and even a few fish on buzz baits early. Most fish are still pre spawn but expect the largemouth bite to slow as we near the next full moon, because of the next big wave of spawning. When the starts shaky head finesse worms and jigs will be a good choice. Be sure to slow down during that time.

LAKE HARTWELL IS FULL, CLEAR, 60’S

Bass fishing is good. Bass are on the move into the shallows with the warm weather warming up the water at a steady pace. The full moon is 10 days away and the bass will be on the beds. Expect to majority of the bass to on the beds in about two weeks. The males are still roaming the shallow water on the sunny side of the banks. This is where the females will lay their eggs so the sun can warm the water up and make certain of a good hatch. Several baits like the spinnerbait, Husky Jerk baits and jigs along with Shad Raps will catch bass this week. The spotted bass are on the move as well and will be a lot more aggressive this week. They will spawn in a little deeper water than the largemouth. Fish the coves and all the shallow water. There will a concentration in many areas where the water is warmest.

LAKE RUSSELL IS FULL, CLEAR, 60’S

Bass fishing is good off the rivers with buzz baits and Mann’s Shallow Minus One bright crank baits. Keep a trick worm and a Super Fluke ready for the shallow fish on any wood and on the small points in the creek. Up the river, use a spinner bait and the Stanley 3/8 ounce all white spinnerbaits will work off the rivers in the pockets and around wood. Try the clear creeks with buzz baits and spinner baits as well as trick worms. Use the Scrounger and a Fluke trailer in all white on any wood or rocks.

CLARKS HILL IS DOWN .52 FEET, 70’S

Bass fishing is good and the fish will be on the beds in ten days. Anglers will be fishing bedding bass. Bass can still be caught on Super Flukes, X Raps and shallow running Shad Raps in and around grassy flats. The grass mats will be submerged, so look for the dark shadows along the bottom or drag a jig or Carolina Rig through an area to find the type and color of the grass. Small flats that run near a deep ditch or River channel are the best places to catch your limit this week. Be sure to try the Scrounger with a Super Fluke as the trailer. Trick worms can also work.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN 1.8 FEET, MAIN LAKE IS CLEARING, RIVERS ARE STAINED & 70’S BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing is good. The fish are starting to spawn. There are some good fish to be caught near the edges of spawning flats in 8 15 feet of water. To locate fish, fish a Spro Little John MD in Nasty Shad or Cell Mate. Try and parallel the grass lines instead of casting directly to them. Use a fluorocarbon line to rip the crank bait free from the grass like the 16 pound test Sunline FC Sniper. Slow down when the fish start biting and try the Carolina and a Big Bite Baits 6″ finesse worm in June bug. Work a Senko on and around shallow water around lily pads and grass. Try the Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper on a 5/0 Weighted EWG Superline hook (Gamakatsu) and swim in through and over the tops of the grass and pads. This technique will catch both quantity and quality. Use the Texas rigged or Carolina rigged finesse worm. If pepper grass is present, swim a jig to catch some big ones. A 3/8 ounce Buddha Baits in Seine Swim Jig in bluegill or green pumpkin paired with a 4 inch Buddha Baits Swag Swimmer in watermelon gold is working for swimming through the grass.

LAKE GEORGE IS FULL, 70’S

Bass fishing is good. The best fishing in the early and late evening hours seems to be the best bet. Spinnerbaits, buzz baits and floating worms all have been catching fish. Look around for those grass lines near deeper water as from the patterns this weekend that’s been a big plus in catching the better fish. June bug and red shad are local favorites when going deep. Work the drop offs and channel or creel ledges and any sharp drop off points during this time. Added scent is another good idea and garlic is preferred by most anglers. Long cast and slow retrieves will be the secret on the Carolina rig. Down the lake towards the dam, a darker color jig along with the Carolina rig will be all the big baits of choice all day. Fish every stump and lay down you can find either on your graph or on the bank.

WEISS LAKE IS AT 1 FEET 2 INCHES BELOW FULL POOL AND CLEAR AND 61 63 DEGREES BY MARK COLLINS GUIDE SERVICE

Bass fishing is great and they are shallow, and moving into the spawning coves. Some fish are starting to cruise the banks.

Crappie fishing is good and they are being caught long line trolling with Jiffy jigs in colors JJ13, JJ17, JJ20, JJ24 in Little River, Big Nose Creek, Big Spring Creek and Church House cove. Yellow Creek is also producing some good fish, Mud Creek is also producing. Crappie are also being caught around deeper docks tight lining jigs. With the warming trend look for the crappie to start going shallow to spawn in the next week or so.

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, THE MAIN LAKEHAS A LIGHT STAIN AND THE CREEKS ARE CLEAR, TEMPRATURE 63 67

Bass fishing is good. The bass have started to move into the coves and creeks. Look around any wood structure, or boat docks. Spinner baits, worked around the wood or docks has been the best producer over the past few days. White or white/chartreuse have been the best color. Small crank baits fished around the docks will draw a strike. A chrome rattle trap, or a small shad rap number 5 or 7 in fire tiger, or shad color will work depending on water color. A shaky head worked under the docks from the middle of the creeks to the back will also draw a few extra strikes.

Striper report by Captain Mark Smith, Reel Time guide service. Call 404 803 0741 reeltime@bellsouth.net

Striper fishing is good. The stripers have started their spring run to the dam and up the rivers. Live bait fished on down lines and flat lines have been producing all week at the dam. Some fish are deep and some are up on the points.

Crappie fishing is good. The fish are in the creeks and large coves. Long lines with double jigs trolled at 1mph has been the best producer over the past week. Any jig as long as the jig has chartreuse in it will work.

Make sure you stop by Sugar Creek Marina and pick up your spoons and all your tackle needs. You can also book your crappie and striper trips with Reel Time Service at 404 803 0741 or reeltime@bellsouth.net

LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 1.2 FEET STAINED, 70’s

Bass fishing is good as fish prepare to spawn. Most fish are now in coves and protected bays, although a few remain along main lake banks. Many different type baits have produced recently, although a few have been better than most. Spinner baits have done especially well in the stained to muddy water. Single spin baits with large Colorado blades have been good during early morning and in muddy water. Seawalls and dock posts are prime targets for single spin models, which are less snag proof than double or tandem spin baits. But the single spin generates more vibration, which helps bass zero in on the target in dirty water. Baits with double Colorado blades are especially good around wood cover such as lay downs, stumps, and brush piles. Tandem spin models and double willow blade baits are just right for retrieving through the grass. On any of the models, gold blades have probably been the best overall, with silver, copper, and colored blades also producing. Chartreuse and white combination skirts have been good, along with black chartreuse, blue chartreuse, and blue white. A 5 inch Senko in the June bug color has shined as a come back bait for missed strikes on the spinner bait. Zoom lizards in 5 or 6 inch sizes have done well rigged both Texas and Carolina style. Try to use the lightest weight possible for the conditions. Small to medium size crank baits are still catching a few fish and try a buzz bait. This bait may not draw but one or two bites, possibly the largest of the day.

JACKSON LAKE IS DOWN .70 FEET, CLEARING & 60’S

Bass fishing is great and the fish are shallow and taking a variety of baits from back in the pockets to the main lake. You will find spots gathered on rocky main lake points and sea walls. Fish any shallow wood on the banks or back in the pockets. Throw a white spinnerbait with nickel blades and get it close to wood and rock cover. Bump the cover and use a slow retrieve. Also, use the jig and craw trailer. A green jig should work well for finding big fish and taking fish that didn’t jump on the blade bait. You can have a little fun with floating worms if you like. Fish a weightless trick worm around shallow brush piles and dock posts. These bites will likely be smaller fish, but the visible bait adds to the fun. Rig it whacky or no weight Texas, in white or green pumpkin. The shade of overhanging trees and docks will hold fish when the sun is up and skipping a floating worm will work. A green Senko is also a top producer around wood in the 2 to 5 foot range. Flip or skip the 5″ Senko around docks and wood cover and let it fall with plenty of slack. If it makes it to the bottom, twitch and pause it briefly then make another presentation. This bait is working best when falling on a wacky rig but hang ups will be more of a problem near wood cover.
